Police car-Sept2013-01A man facing charges over an alleged police pursuit in Shirley early today was remanded in custody after an appearance in the Christchurch District Court.

James Keith Parekh, 21, faced charges of unlawfully taking a car, failing to stop, reckless driving, and driving while forbidden.

Police opposed bail and duty lawyer Trudi Aickin said no application for his release would be considered until a lawyer had been assigned and Parekh had received legal advice.

Judge Raoul Neave remanded Parekh in custody without plea to July 23 to appear by video-link from the prison.

Police said the incident began when they tried to stop an unlawfully taken car in Shirley about 5am. The driver allegedly drove towards an officer who was setting out road spikes, before colliding with a parked patrol car.

The driver ran from the scene but was found with the help of a police dog.
