Court House-07A 19-year-old arrested on charges related to the bashing of an elderly man in New Brighton Mall has been remanded in custody at an appearance in the Christchurch District Court.

Resham Toa Blake-Faatafa, faced two charges of intentionally causing grievous bodily harm to the 72-year-old victim who was found lying on the footpath in a serious condition.

The victim was taken to Christchurch Hospital in the early hours of Wednesday morning, where was said to be in a serious but stable condition.

Defence counsel Phillip Watts said Blake-Faatafa did not wish to make an application for bail, which the police are opposing.

He said Blake-Faatafa would consent to a remand in custody for defence counsel to be assigned and a bail application to be prepared.
Judge David Saunders remanded Blake-Faatafa to July 24, for the bail application to be heard by video-link from the prison. The remand was without plea.
