Teen murder accused remanded to High Court

High Court-panoply1A 16-year-old charged with the murder of an elderly man in Upper Riccarton at the weekend is being remanded in custody for a High Court appearance in about three weeks.

The accused appeared in the Youth Court before Judge Robert Murfitt today. Almost all details of the hearing and the accused – other than the age – were suppressed at the request of defence counsel Ruth Buddicom.

The accused was arrested yesterday after police inquiries into the death of an elderly man who died at an Owens Terrace property in Upper Riccarton. His body was found by teenagers who were visiting his address.

The accused’s next court appearance will be on August 21.
