More commercial burglaries alleged

Court House-general1Another five charges have been laid against Andrew Wayne Smith, an alleged burglar who targeted small businesses in Christchurch and Kaiapoi.

The 48-year-old Mairehau labourer was on remand in custody without plea on 34 charges relating to burglaries of small businesses all over Christchurch during June, July, and early August.

In the Christchurch District Court today defence counsel Josh Lucas asked for a further remand for Smith because of the new charges, three of which refer to burglaries of Kaiapoi businesses in early August.

Judge Brian Callaghan granted the remand for further disclosure and discussions with the police, to September 10.

Smith appeared by video-link from Christchurch Men’s Prison and remains in custody.
