Two deny Woodend arson, burglary

Woodend-sign2Two people charged with the burglary and arson of a house at Woodend have pleaded not guilty and elected trial by jury.

They entered their pleas before a registrar at the Christchurch District Court today, and were remanded on bail to the same case review hearing on November 2.

Te Hani Marie Burns, 26, and Benjamin Jordan Hylands, 27, face charges of burgling setting fire to the house at Woodend on July 23.

In another court session yesterday, Turi John Burns, a 36-year-old labourer, admitted arson of the house, injuring the householder with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in another incident soon afterwards, and threatening to kill him.

He was remanded in custody for a Crown sentencing on November 11.
