Bail granted to teen facing arson charge

Court House-general1A 17-year-old faces a serious arson charge after a blaze that threatened homes in South Brighton yesterday.

Jayvan James Simms was granted bail at an appearance before Judge Emma Smith in the Christchurch District Court today.

Simms was remanded without plea to December 22, with a bail condition that he report to the Christchurch Central Police Station every afternoon.

He is charged that he recklessly damaged vegetation by fire when he ought to know that it was likely to cause danger to life.

The vegetation, which was along the beachfront, is described as the property of the Crown.

As part of his bail conditions, Simms is banned from associating with another named person and is not allowed to go to Marine Parade.
