Remand on WINZ threat charge

Court House from Victoria Sq-101A man charged with threatening a Work and Income staff member in an incident last Friday has been granted a registrar’s remand at the Christchurch District Court.

The remand without plea, by a registrar at the court office, meant Athol John Chilton did not need to appear in court before a judge.

The 50-year-old Phillipstown man was remanded to February 25, to get legal advice.

He was arrested last week and released on police bail for his appearance yesterday. Bail continues for the remand at court.

He is charged with threatening to injure a man with intent to intimidate him.

At the time of the incident, police said a man had made verbal threats to security staff outside the WINZ office in Linwood, saying he would return with a firearm.

The office was temporarily closed, while police made their inquiries. No firearm was found at the property they visited.
