Custody remand for dairy robbery accused

Aranui-101A 21-year-old Aranui man alleged to have robbed a dairy in Breezes Road was remanded in custody after a brief appearance in the Christchurch District Court today.

Isaac Whatuira was charged that on June 28, with persons unknown, he robbed dairy manager Ruchik Patel of cigarettes and cash.

He was remanded in custody to apply for legal aid, and will next appear by video-link from the Christchurch Men’s Prison on July 14.

Mr Patel, the manager of the store, was alone when the alleged robbers came in. He chased and held one of the men until the other hit him in the face with a hammer.

Whatuira was also charged with unlawfully having a knife on Brougham Street on June 29.
