Woman admits taking money from dementia patient

Court House-Sept-2013-06A woman has admitted taking money from her 88-year-old employer after he was admitted to Christchurch Hospital and diagnosed with dementia.

Cheree Margaret Freitas, 25, admitted the fraud charge at an appearance in the Christchurch District Court on Thursday.

Freitas worked in the Hororata victim’s home helping with cleaning and other household chores. She worked two hours twice a week and was paid by cheque.

Between November 2015 and February 2016, Freitas took nine cheques from his cheque book, copied his signature, and banked the cheques worth $23,500 into her account.

Freitas was charged with a representative charge of using a document for pecuniary advantage. She told police she wanted to give her children a good Christmas.

The man has since died, and Freitas was remanded on bail for a restorative justice meeting with his daughter. She will be sentenced on September 7.
