Custody remand on dairy robbery charge

Court House-Sept-2013-08An 18-year-old has appeared in the Christchurch District Court charged with robbing the Kirk Road Dairy in Templeton of cigarettes on Monday.

Police said three alleged offenders, armed with a pistol and a metal bar, were heavily disguised when they entered the dairy about 12pm on Monday.

Judge Tom Gilbert remanded Reuben Banks in custody when he made a brief court appearance, and he will appear for pleas and a bail application, by video link from the Christchurch Men’s Prison on September 22.

Police said a number of search warrants were executed this morning, and Banks was arrested.

The Canterbury Armed Offenders Squad were involved in the arrest.

It is alleged one of the offenders manhandled the dairy owner, while the other two targeted cash and cigarettes.

The dairy owner was punched, but did not require medical treatment.
