A 24-year-old man who allegedly burgled a home a family had evacuated because of the tsunami threat, was remanded in custody at the Christchurch District Court.

Tama Tapine appeared in court by video-link from the Christchurch Mens’ Prison.

It is alleged he burgled a house in Bower Avenue, New Brighton, in the early hours of November 14. Electronic equipment, an expensive hearing aid device, and a work ute were stolen.

The family had left the home after the magnitude 7.8 earthquake, when the tsunami warning sirens were activated.

Judge Emma Smith remanded Tapine in custody to appear by video-link on January 10.
