Custody remand after court room strip

A 32-year-old man stripped naked in Christchurch’s main court when he appeared on rape and sexual violation charges.

The man was immediately removed from the dock and taken to the Court House holding cells by police court escort staff.

Christchurch District Court Judge Alistair Garland told defence counsel Chris Shannon: “In view of the defendant stripping himself naked, I intend to proceed in his absence. Do you agree?”

Mr Shannon agreed, and the court continued with the remand hearing, at the man’s first appearance on the two charges.

He faces allegations of a sex attack at Christchurch on January 3, 2016. He is charged with sexually violating a woman by penetrating her with his fingers, and by raping her.

No bail application was made and the Ilam man was remanded in custody for an appearance by video-link from the prison on February 20.

Judge Garland said the remand would allow legal aid to be arranged, and pleas could be entered.

Mr Shannon applied for the man’s name to be suppressed and the judge made an interim order.

When Judge Garland asked whether there were mental health issues, Mr Shannon replied, “Potentially.”
