Bail was refused for a 47-year-old man charged with the armed robbery of two Christchurch Kiwibank branches in six days.

Police issued security camera photos after the robberies showing the alleged robber making his getaway on a red bicycle.

Brent James Atkinson, of Upper Riccarton, entered no pleas to the charges when he appeared before Judge Alistair Garland in the Christchurch District Court today.

He is charged with robbery of the bank’s Bush Inn branch on January 19, and the Riccarton Road branch on January 25, while armed with a firearm.

Judge Garland heard the bail application presented by defence counsel Tony Garrett, and opposed by the police.

He declined to release Atkinson and remanded him in custody to appear in court by video-link on February 20, for pleas to be entered.
