A 21-year-old Aranui man has been jailed for four years after admitting being the disguised, hammer-wielding robber who was bravely tackled by a dairy employee.
Isaac Whatuira was jailed by Judge Stephen O’Driscoll at his sentencing in the Christchurch District Court today, after pleading guilty to the armed robbery charge in October.
Staff member Ruchik Patel was alone in the One Stop Convenience Store in Breezes Road, Aranui, when Whatuira and an unknown associate entered the shop at 6.20pm on June 28.
Both men had their faces covered and were carrying hammers.
They took tobacco and cash, but Mr Patel – also carrying a hammer – followed them from the shop and struggled with Whatuira outside in Breezes Road.
He ripped off Whatuira’s hood and mask and pinned his arms to his side.
Whatuira got away after hitting Mr Patel’s arm with the hammer, before the second robber punched the shop employee in the face, breaking his nose.
