Intruder accessed porn sites

A man described as being “very religious”, who got inside a closed fitness centre at Eastgate, ate chocolates and got onto a computer where he logged onto Facebook and viewed pornographic websites.

The computer recorded the electronic activities of Joseph O’Connor, 24, during the visit in March, and recorded more pornographic website visits during an April visit. The phone system noted that he used the gym telephone to speak to his partner on her cellphone for 20 minutes.

O’Connor was being sentenced by Judge Michael Crosbie in the Christchurch District Court after admitting two charges of being unlawfully in a building, two charges of trespass, receiving a stolen bicycle, being unlawfully in a yard, and possession of synthetic cannabis.

Defence counsel Philip Watts told the court: “He is a very religious man. I asked him why he came to Christchurch when he did not have any family supports here, and he said it was just the name of the place.”

The trespass charges were related to O’Connor’s relationship issues. Judge Crosbie noted a police report of 31 family violence incidents involving him in the past.

The latest offending occurred after he had moved from the North Island. He had been in a number of relationships which had “eventually turned wrong”, said the judge.

The offences were “largely nuisance”, said the judge, but they underscored his issues with alcohol and drug use.

He told O’Connor: “I don’t like the sound of how you deal with relationships and women. You need to mature, man up, and accept your responsibilities.”

He imposed 200 hours of community work and nine months’ supervision.
