September 25 has been set for the start of a two-week murder trial for Peter John Carroll, accused of bashing Marcus Luke Tucker to death.

Carroll, a 52-year-old Bishopdale man, is accused of bashing Tucker to death with a metal steering lock and then setting the body on fire where it was dumped at a roadside near Lake Ellesmere in April 2016. He denies the charge.

Carroll remains in custody after his remand by Justice Gerald Nation in a video-link appearance from the prison, at the High Court in Christchurch today.

Barnaby Hawes appeared as Crown prosecutor, and Tim Fournier appeared for Carroll.
