Court House sprinter charged

A woman who bolted from the dock and got out of the Court House as she was being sentenced to jail has been charged with escaping from custody.Nikita Chela McCausland, a 29-year-old mother of a three-year-old, made her sprint for freedom on June 21 in front of police, court security staff, her lawyer, the judge, and media.

She got out of the Court House — apparently “ghosting” through a doorway as a staff member was using it — but was recaptured in a tussle on the walkway on the bank above the Avon River.

She was frog-marched back into the court to complete her sentencing by Judge Gary MacAskill who jailed her for 25 months.

Yesterday, she was charged with escaping from the lawful custody of the Christchurch District Court, and was remanded in custody for an appearance by video-link from the prison on August 17.
