Mental health report ordered after mall incident

A psychiatric report will be prepared on a 17-year-old youth being held in custody after a bizarre violent incident at Riccarton’s Westfield Mall at the weekend.

Christchurch District Court Judge Alistair Garland ordered the report under the Criminal Procedures (Mentally Impaired Persons) Act when Brendon James Brown appeared by video-link from the prison yesterday.

Brown, of Woolston, first appeared on Monday on charges of stealing a $5 bar from a shelving unit at K-Mart, using the bar as a weapon to assault a woman, unlawful possession of an offensive weapon, threatening to kill people, disorderly behaviour at the mall, intentionally damaging a rubbish tin and metal bowl, and robbing Michael Hill Jewellers.

He has entered no pleas to the charges.

His family was present at a closed-court session where the judge ordered the psychiatric report.

He is being held in the Youth Unit at Christchurch Men’s Prison pending his next appearance by video-link on August 10.

Defence counsel Anselm Williams sought an interim order suppressing Brown’s name but withdrew the application when advised that there had previously been no order in place and the name was published in the report of Monday’s appearance.
