Kaiapoi man faces car-chase charges

A Kaiapoi man who allegedly led police on a 30-km early morning chase across Christchurch was remanded in custody when he appeared in the Christchurch District Court.

Christopher Warren Corfield, a 33-year-old mechanic, entered no pleas to five charges and was remanded for an appearance by video-link from the prison on August 28.

Police opposed Corfield’s release on bail, duty lawyer Michelle Barrell told the court, and no application was made today.

Police said the car involved lost two wheels during the high speed drive from Bexley, through Redwood, and on to Hillmorton where it stopped at 1.41am. Police used road spikes to stop the alleged runaway driver.

Corfield faces charges of reckless driving on Anzac Drive, failing to stop for the police – an aggravated charge alleging he has done that at least twice before – disqualified driving, and unlawful possession of a shotgun and shell the police say they found in the car.
