Backpacker hostel burglaries alleged

A man listed as having “no fixed abode” has been charged with burglaries at six backpacker hostels in Christchurch and Nelson.

Michael Allan Burgess, 31, was remanded in custody when he appeared before Judge Brian Callaghan in the Christchurch District Court today.

He entered no pleas to charges of burgling a hostel at Tahuna Beach, Nelson, in mid-April, and charges of burgling five different hostels in Christchurch over the last few days.

Burgess was remanded to appear by video-link from the prison on September 11.
