A man charged with kidnapping, stealing a car, dangerous driving, and failing to stop for police, was remanded in custody in the Christchurch District Court today.

Michael Mamea, 30, whose charging document says he has no fixed abode, allegedly threatened the driver of a car in Hawdon Street, Sydenham, on Saturday morning.

Police allege the man stole the car, drove it and the owner around the city, then stopped at a petrol station in Opawa where the owner escaped.

The victim alerted the police who pursued the car and stopped it on Mairehau Road, Shirley. The victim did not know Mamea, but was unharmed.

Mamea was remanded in custody to appear by video-link from the Christchurch Men’s Prison on October 2.
