Murder trial jury to continue on Monday

After about six hours of deliberations, the jury in the trial of a babysitter charged with the murder of a toddler has retired for the weekend and will reconvene in the High Court at Christchurch on Monday.

The jury retired on Friday morning after Justice Rachel Dunningham completed her summing up in the trial of Shayal Upashna Sami, who was 18 at the time of the death of one-year-old Aaliyah Ashlyn Chand in January 2015.

The trial has so far lasted two weeks.

The Crown alleges it was “a reckless killing”, and the injuries had been inflicted in a moment of anger and frustration, but defence counsel, Jonathan Eaton QC, said that it was a tragic accident with the injuries caused by the child’s unwitnessed fall from furniture.
