Bail was granted to a Canterbury man charged with an assault which left the alleged victim injured in Hororata Domain on Tuesday.

Tumahana John Ponga, 44, a fencer from Malvern Hills in Selwyn District, was remanded to December 13 at an appearance in the Christchurch District Court.

Ponga had been held in custody overnight after his arrest but was released after defence counsel April Kelland made application for bail before Judge David Saunders.

Ponga entered no plea to the charge of injuring the 20-year-old victim with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Police were alerted to the alleged serious assault on Monday night and spent the night looking for the victim before he was found on Tuesday, in the domain west of Christchurch.
