An 18-year-old who allegedly attacked a woman in Hagley Park last night will stay in custody while a legal aid application is processed.

Tane Faatafa appeared by audio visual link in the Christchurch District Court. He was handcuffed, and refused to give his duty lawyer an address or a family contact number.

Faatafa has been charged with injuring with intent to injure the woman, wounding the woman with intent, robbing the woman of a handbag, laptop, and personal possessions while armed with a knife, and unlawfully having a knife in a public place.

Police said they were called to Hagley Park late last night after a report that a woman was assaulted when she was walking to her car.

A man had allegedly stolen her property and run off, but was arrested nearby a short time later.

The woman was taken to hospital and treated for her injuries.

Judge Stephen O’Driscoll remanded Faatafa in custody to April 30.
