Tutor faces jail term for under-age sex

A Mairehau man faces a likely prison term for a six-week sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl.

Donald John Gould was remanded on bail to a crown sentencing session on January 23, and warned by Christchurch District Court Judge John Bisphan that jail was “very likely”.

Gould, a 38-year-old tutor, had pleaded guilty to six charges of having various forms of sexual connection with the girl. They related to July and August last year.

Police prosecutor Trudi Aickin said that sex had taken place numerous times during the relationship.

She told of the girl’s parents making inquiries to try to find her because she was late home one night.

Gould told police he was in love with the girl and was not happy in his marriage.

Defence counsel Nick Rout said Gould suffered from mental health issues, and had a young family.

Judge Bisphan called for a probation report to look at Gould’s suitability for home detention, and a victim impact report on the teenager.
