New firearms charges laid after police shooting

Six new charges have been laid against 31-year-old Steven Paul Smith, the brother of the man who allegedly shot two police officers in Christchurch last week.

Two of the new charges are joint charges with his brother Christopher Graeme Smith, of cultivating and possession of cannabis.

The other four charges are firearms-related. One of them is a joint charge with his brother of being in possession of a .22 bolt action rifle with scope and silencer except for some lawful, proper and sufficient purpose.

He is also charged with possession of a Baihal shotgun, possession of a Remington 742 .243 semi automatic, and possession of a BSA 1901 Lee Enfield .303.

No pleas have been entered.

The police handed Christchurch District Court Judge David Holderness a written opposition to bail notice.

Defence counsel David Ruth said the firearms were seized by the police at the shooting incident.

Judge Holderness considered the arguments and but refused bail, saying he believed that electronically monitored bail would be more appropriate.

He remanded Smith in custody to a post-committal conference on August 10.

The original cannabis charge laid last week against Steven Smith has been withdrawn. He is listed as unemployed.

Christopher Smith is listed as a 34-year-old process worker.
