Arrest over Brighton Pier altercation
A Shirley man has been remanded on theft and assault charges over an alleged incident in which a man says he was assaulted at the New Brighton Pier and his camera thrown into the sea.
Police say they were called to an altercation on the pier about 5pm on Saturday between a man taking photographs and a group of people fishing.
Richard Paul Churcher, 46, has entered no pleas to the charges of assaulting the man and stealing his camera.
His case was listed at the Christchurch District Court today but he did not appear before a judge. A registrar granted a remand on bail for Churcher to get legal advice and appear again at court on September 17.
