Second man arrested for Rangiora killing

police-carChristchurch Police have arrested a second man in connection with the murder of Tony John Lochhead in Rangiora last Friday.

A 39-year old Christchurch man was arrested today and will appear in the Christchurch District Court tomorrow, charged with the murder of Mr Lochhead and the aggravated wounding of Mr Lochhead’s brother.

He is jointly charged with a 36-year old Rakaia man who was arrested on Sunday night. . That man appeared in the Christchurch District Court on Monday and was remanded in custody to the High Court on October 11 and granted name suppression.

Detective Inspector David Long said the man was arrested this morning at a car park in Hornby, as a result of ongoing police inquiries over the past three days.

Police are not seeking anyone else in relation to the murder investigation, Detective Inspector Long says. “However we are continuing to speak to a number of other people who may face charges in relation to assisting the alleged offenders after the incident occurred.”

Detective Inspector Long has confirmed that Mr Lochhead suffered a stab wound, and says Police have recovered a knife from the scene where the incident is believed to have occurred.

He said police received a positive response to calls for information about people hitchhiking between Rangiora and Christchurch. One person came forward to advise that they had offered a ride to one of the men who has subsequently been charged.

“We’re grateful for the information and assistance we have received from the public, which has been extremely valuable to the investigation team.”
