Man has little recall of park mugging
Police say a man is “doing okay” but has little recollection of a vicious Hagley Park mugging early on Sunday morning.
The man, in his 20s, has been discharged from hospital after treatment for head injuries including a suspected fracture to his left eye socket.
Christchurch police are seeking assistance from the public to locate two men who may have been involved in the assault.
The incident occurred between 3am and 5.20am on Sunday in South Hagley Park on the walkway along Deans Avenue, opposite Freyberg Place.
Detective Andrew Owens says the victim was walking home from the Addington area through the park when he was approached by two or more men and assaulted.
He was knocked unconscious, and was left lying in the park for an hour or more before being found by a passer-by who called ambulance services.
The man was taken to hospital but was discharged later that morning.
Several items were taken from the victim, including a cell phone, wallet, iPod and keys.
Detective Owens says the victim has little recollection of the attack. Police would like to speak to anyone who may have seen a group of two or three people in this area during the time.
“We are particularly interested in two males who may have been seen walking in the area – believed to be Caucasians, in their mid-twenties to early thirties, one with blonde hair,” he says.
“If anyone has seen these men or or any other suspicious or unusual activity that in South Hagley Park early on Sunday, please contact Police.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Owens at Christchurch Police on 03-363-7659.
