Ten-year non-parole term for murder at housing complex
A 59-year-old man has been jailed for life with a non-parole term of 10 years for stabbing his neighbour to death with a boning knife at a Christchurch City Council housing complex in Spreydon.
Colin Albert Hoani stabbed 67-year-old Valmai Jean McFie about 17 times and then confessed to the killing to another resident, the High Court at Christchurch was told at his sentencing by Justice Graham Panckhurst.
Hoani alleged the killing had been triggered by a racist remark.
A psychiatric report was prepared on him before the sentencing and it showed no mental health problems that could explain the offending.
The neighbours at the housing complex in MacGibbon Place, where the murder occurred on July 20, had complained about each other and had been through mediation which had not been successful.
The Christchurch City Council will not release details about the complaints for privacy reasons.
Hoani pleaded guilty to the murder charge in the High Court less than a month after the killing.
