Police car-Sept2013-03A man admitted armed hold-ups of a service station and a liquor store, and demanding cash at another service station, when he appeared in the Christchurch District Court today, on his 21st birthday.

Te Arimoana Jamyle Simon pleaded guilty to two charges of aggravated robbery, and one charge of demanding to steal.

Simon used an air pistol to hold up the Caltex Russley petrol station on November 5, where he stole cash.

On November 7 he went to Super Liquor Store in Harewood Road and again presented the air pistol and demanded cash. The attendant saw the air pistol was not real and refused to give him anything, and Simon left saying that it was only a joke.

Later that day he went to the Mobil station in Redwood with an 45cm knife. He told the victim to fill up the backpack or he would cut him. He was given money out of the till but was told that the safe could not be opened. Simon took packets of cigarettes, and left the station.

When he was arrested Simon told the police that he was sick of the financial pressure, and needed the money.

Defence counsel John Brandts-Giesen said Simon had minor previous convictions, but none were anything like this offending.

Simon was sorry but lost it when he had been abandoned by his partner who left with young children, he said.

Judge David Saunders remanded Simon in custody to February 19 for sentencing, and said it was likely Simon would get a prison sentence.
