Court House-Sept-2013-07Duty solicitors have farewelled Judge David Holderness, on his last sitting day in the Christchurch District Court after 25 years as a judge.

The judge has had an official farewell, and is still at work this week, but that is at the Queenstown District Court.

Proceedings paused in Christchurch’s main police court while senior counsel Tony Garrett told Judge Holderness the duty solicitors had appreciated the measured way in which he had dispensed justice while they were working under pressure.

He said Judge Holderness had always been compassionate to those he was dealing with, and unfailingly courteous to the lawyers appearing before him.

The judge said it had been a privilege to spend most of his judicial life in Christchurch. “It has always been a pleasure to have counsel from the Christchurch bar where the standard I think is high and remains high.” He thanked staff and prosecutors.

Counsel Pat Butler thanked the judge on behalf of the Public Defence Service for his “professionalism, politeness, courtesy, and fairness”.
