High Court-panoply1A June date has been set for the trial of two men charged with the murder of a Christchurch man who was allegedly burnt in a petrol attack in April.

The two-week hearing was set to start on June 23 at a pre-trial call-over by Justice Graham Panckhurst in the High Court at Christchurch today.

Shay Barry Webster, 21, of Waltham, and Jason Alistor Barr, 43, unemployed, are charged with murdering Terrance Martin Smith in an incident that took place in Christchurch on April 25, when he received burns to more than 30 percent of his body.

They were originally charged with wounding Mr Smith with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, but the charge was increased to murder about three weeks later when he died in Middlemore Hospital in Auckland.

Both men remain in custody but an application for Webster’s release on electronically monitored bail is scheduled for next Thursday.
