Guilty pleas over petrol threat incident
A man who was tackled by a policeman who prevented him from setting himself alight has admitted two charges at the Christchurch District Court.
The 23-year-old, who has name suppression, admitted having petrol, a lighter, and matches when he threatened to kill a police officer in an incident in St Albans last June.
He forced his way into a house on June 2 and threatened to set it on fire. An occupant and her flatmate barricaded themselves in a garage and phoned police.
The man splashed petrol around the house, and when police arrived threatened to set himself on fire, and threatened to kill a police officer. One of the policemen wrestled the lighter off him, and tackled him to the floor.
He has pleaded guilty to doing a dangerous act, with petrol, a lighter and matches, with reckless disregard for safety, and threatening to kill a police officer.
Judge Raoul Neave remanded the man on electronically monitored bail for sentence on March 5, and ordered a pre-sentence report.
