Police logo-05Bail has been refused for a 26-year-old man charged with a central Christchurch street robbery in which two youths were allegedly threatened with a softball bat.

The Rangiora man, Joshua Lukic, was remanded in custody for a video-link appearance from prison on February 3 after Christchurch District Court Judge Jane Farish declined to release him on bail.

His defence counsel Andrew Bailey said he was likely to make a further application for release on electronically monitored bail. Lukic has not yet entered a plea.

Lukic has full-time night shift work at a Christchurch factory and lives with his pregnant partner and two daughters.

Police allege he was the driver of his car in an early morning incident on January 11 when the car pulled up beside two youths on Fitzgerald Avenue, near Tuam Street, and three men robbed them of $60, two cellphones, a hat, top, bag, four spray cans, a backpack, and a pack of pre-mixed drinks.

Lukic denies any involvement and says the car was taken from him earlier by force.

Judge Farish said the police said in their opposition-to-bail document that the alleged robbers had been armed with a softball bat and the victims had been threatened with serious violence.
