Passenger in boy racer incident pleads guilty
A passenger in a car allegedly involved in a boy racer incident which ended in a police car being rammed in Deans Avenue pleaded guilty to five charges in the Christchurch District Court today.
Harley David Parker, 23, admitted unlawfully getting into the stolen car, possession of a knife, unlawful possession of prescription medicines, taking the medicines from the glove box of the car, and shoplifting tobacco.
The police summary of facts said after Parker had been picked up by an associate he asked for tobacco and filters at the Hagley 24 hours dairy, but when his debit card didn’t work he grabbed them and left the store.
While in the car, he found medication in the glove box, and police located it in his pocket when he was arrested early the next morning inside the stolen car. They also found a pocket knife in his pocket.
Judge Tony Couch said Parker had been on a curfew since the incident on the night of January 4, and sentenced him to 80 hours’ community work and to pay reparation of $65.40 for the tobacco.
The alleged driver of the stolen car, Jessie Charles Ormandy, of Northcote, was denied bail on January 23 and remanded in custody.
The car was allegedly travelling at speed on Bealey Avenue and being followed by a police patrol car. Police say that at the Riccarton Road roundabout the car overcorrected and then rammed the police vehicle.
