Bail bid dropped for armed robbery accused

Court House-Sept-2013-07A man facing charges over armed robberies at two Christchurch bars last month has dropped his bid for release on bail.

Jackson Whakatihi, also known as Jackson Manson, appeared on a video-link from Christchurch Prison at the District Court today, and was granted a further three-week remand without entering pleas.

He will remain in custody until he is next due to appear in court on March 6.The remand was requested by defence counsel Tim Fournier, who said a proposed application for bail would not go ahead.

Whakatihi, 24 and listed as having no fixed abode, faces charges related to robberies by two armed and masked men at the Coasters Tavern in Redwood on January 26, and at The Tannery in Woolston soon after.

He is charged that while armed with a shotgun he robbed one man of $15,000 cash, and assaulting another man with intent to rob him. At the second tavern, the robbers could not get the safe open and left without any money.
