Murder accused said Manning was dead when he stabbed her

jury-boxMurder accused Mauha Huatahi Fawcett said he only stabbed sex worker Mellory Manning once after she had already been beaten up, bashed with an iron bar, and was dead, a witness told the High Court in Christchurch today.

The man said he had a visit from three Mongrel mob members about 1am on December 19 – only about two hours after Miss Manning’s disappearance from Manchester Street – but Fawcett stayed in the car. One of the men had drops of blood on his trousers, he said.

Later that morning Fawcett turned up again and told him that the other two had killed Miss Manning.

Fawcett later told the man the three men had driven around looking for Miss Manning because she owed them money, he said.

They took her back to the mob pad and one man raped her, but when another man tried to join in it got out of hand and she fought back.

They bashed her, kicked her and hit her on the head with a steel bar, and Fawcett was told to stab her, after she was dead.

He said Fawcett thought he was going to earn his patch for what took place, and for keeping his mouth shut.

But Fawcett told him he thought the mob might be thinking about taking him out because he was a bit young, and they didn’t know if he had a big mouth, so he left Christchurch.

Mauha Huatahi Fawcett, 26, who was a Aotearoa Mongrel gang prospect, has denied murdering 27-year-old Ngatai Lynette Manning, known as Mellory, on or about December 18, 2008, and is defending himself.

Manning’s partly naked body was found in the Avon River on December 19, 2008.

Today is the seventh day of the High Court trial before Justice David Gendall and a jury.
