Man says he was pressured into burglaries

Court House-Sept-2013-05A man who pleaded guilty to two burglaries said he was pressured into supplying the building materials he stole to settle a debt.

Hayden Reginald Vandijk, 34, took building materials from adjacent worksites, but his defence counsel,Vicki Walsh, told the Christchurch District Court that all the property had been returned.

She said Vandijk’s motivation was not one of greed, but stupidity, and pressure to settle a debt.

One charge of receiving was withdrawn by police today.

Mrs Walsh said Vandijk was self employed and a sole income earner.

He took building materials belonging to Wellbuilt Homes and Wilson Built NZ Ltd at Lincoln.

Judge Emma Smith remanded him on bail for sentencing on May 5.

She ordered a pre-sentence report to assess Vandijk’s suitability for a home detention sentence. She also told him she would be confiscating his trailer, used in the burglaries, at his sentencing.
