Stabbing accused named
Name suppression has been lifted on a 23-year-old man charged with stabbing another man in the neck in an incident in Spreydon last week.
The man – who faces a remand in custody after bail was refused at an appearance in the Christchurch District Court today – is John David Evans, of Hoon Hay.
He was charged with wounding Daniel Joseph Patrick Leahy with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, after neighbours found the victim apparently cornered in a driveway in Somersent Crescent by four men and bleeding from a 6cm gash in his neck.
The neighbours staunched the bleeding with towels until emergency services arrived on the night of February 19. Mr Leahy had surgery at Christchurch Hospital.
Evans appeared in court on Saturday morning when he was remanded in custody to today for defence counsel to be appointed and for a bail application.
Defence counsel Peter Doody made the application while Evans appeared in court by video-link from Christchurch Men’s Prison.
Judge Stephen O’Driscoll refused bail and remanded Evans in custody to appear again on March 17. Name suppression was not continued.
