Brazilian men in custody on drugs charges

Court House-general1Three Brazilian men have been remanded in custody after appearances in the Christchurch District Court on cocaine-related charges today.

Marcos Andre Barbosa, a 35-year-old labourer, and Josue Da Conceicao, a-36-year-old timber worker were charged with importing cocaine and possession of cocaine for supply, The charges were laid in Auckland.

Thiago Augusto De Oliveira, a 31-year-old factory hand, was charged with possession of cocaine for supply.

All three men, who have Christchurch addresses, were remanded in custody, two until March 13, and Barbosa until March 20 after a Portuguese interpreter can be arranged for him.

Police prosecutor Glenn Henderson said police did not oppose bail for De Oliveira, but Judge Jane Farish adjourned a bail hearing for him to March 13.

A fourth man has been named on the charges as a joint offender for both the importing and possession for supply charges.

Mr Henderson said the charges may be moved to the Auckland court.
