Police car-Sept2013-02A 20-year-old charged with manslaughter after an alleged bashing victim died in hospital has been remanded on bail to the High Court after a brief appearance in the Christchurch District Court today.

Taele Victor Faletolu, an assembler from Shirley, was originally charged with intentionally injuring Alfred Utapu Waterhouse after an incident outside a New Brighton party in the early hours of March 2.

Mr Waterhouse was admitted to Christchurch Hospital’s intensive care unit with critical injuries and died on March 9.

Faletolu was remanded on bail without plea on the injuring charge, but since then the police have laid the manslaughter charge.

Defence counsel Bridget Ayrey asked for the remand on the new charge to a pre-trial call-over which will be in the High Court because of the increased seriousness of the charge.

Judge Stephen O’Driscoll granted bail for the remand to April 16.
