Two street robbers jailed

Court House-Sept-2013-08Two men have been jailed for the early morning street robbery of two youths in central Christchurch.

The pair – and a third offender who has been dealt with separately – forced the youths to hand over backpacks containing $60 cash, cellphones, clothing, pre-mixed drinks, and four spray cans.

Joshua Lukic, of Rangiora, and Jade Allan Manuel, both 26, appeared for sentence in the Christchurch District Court before Judge Stephen O’Driscoll after admitting the aggravated robbery.

Lukic was driving the car that pulled up beside the victims about 1.40am on January 11. No weapon was used but the youths were threatened to make them hand over the property.

Judge O’Driscoll said the victims were not injured but, “they were clearly scared and frightened”.

At an earlier court appearance, the judge was told that Lukic had full-time night shift work at a Christchurch factory and lived with his pregnant partner and two daughters.

Manuel was jailed for 20 months. He has 20 previous convictions including eight for breaching court oders.

Lukic was jailed for 23 months because he had a worse record of previous offending, including a three-year jail term imposed in 2005 for aggravated robbery.

Both have been given first-strike warnings under the system that imposes heavier sentences on repeat violent offenders.

Both were ordered to pay a $122 share of the reparation for the unrecovered property.
