Youth held in custody over pistol charge
A 19-year-old who allegedly used a pistol intending to rob a dairy in New Brighton was remanded in custody to July 7, in the Christchurch District Court today.
Taukiri Manuell was charged with assaulting a woman with intent to rob her while armed with an offensive weapon.
The charge alleges that Manuell was armed with a .22 pistol when the incident occurred about 4.15pm yesterday. He was arrested in Aranui last night after a police search that included members of the Armed Offenders’ Squad.
Defence counsel Nick Rout requested bail for Manuell but Judge Brian Callaghan said it was a serious offence, suppressed facts relating to the charge, and remanded Manuell in custody.
