Fifty-two-year-old Areanne Marie Fox had sought comfort in alcohol after she says she was the victim of a domestic violence incident.

The sickness beneficiary was originally charged with burglary of the Piko Crescent home, but pleaded guilty in the Christchurch District Court today when the charge was reduced by the police to being unlawfully in a building.

She also admitted a shoplifting charge.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Dave Murray said Fox went to the house at 4pm on February 13, dropped her purse and keys as she stood on an airconditioning unit to see inside, and then entered through an unlocked door.

She rummaged in a wardrobe and took clothes out, removed two boxes of alcohol, and drank the vodka and some other drinks.

She then inexplicably dragged two couches and tipped them into a courtyard.

She dragged a third couch into the kitchen where she fell asleep and was found later.

The next day she was caught shoplifting groceries worth $31.38 from a supermarket at Westfield Mall in Riccarton. The goods were either recovered or paid for.

Defence counsel Nicola Pointer said Fox had previously had issues with alcohol but had not taken her anti-abuse medication on the day of the burglary. She had sought solace in alcohol after being the victim of a domestic violence incident that morning.

Judge Paul Kellar noted that she had been on sentences of intensive supervision and community work at the time of the offences.

None of her previous convictions were for dishonesty, but she had a series of drink-driving offences or refusing blood specimens.

He imposed a further nine month term of intensive supervision.
