Streaking costs naked runner

Court House-Sept-2013-08Forsyth Barr Stadium streaker Adam Steven Holtslag can do his arithmetic. Crime does not pay.

The 28-year-old Christchurch man has copped a $500 fine for his naked effort during the All Blacks vs England rugby test in Dunedin on June 14.

That’s all of the $500 bet he won with his streak onto the ground. The Justices of the Peace who heard his case at the Christchurch District Court today also imposed a $130 in court costs.

When he was downed in a bone-crunching tackle on the field, and arrested at the sideline, he told police he had done it for the bet. “It was well worth it.”

He said outside the court afterwards today: “It wasn’t worth it. I said that while I was still drunk.”

The amount of media attention had been ridiculous, including harassing his grandpaents, he said.

He had got a broken rib from the tackle but he said he felt no ill-will towards the security guard who downed him.

“It’s all over now,” he said.

Prosecutor Sergeant Fiona Roberts said there had been 28,000 people including many family groups at the test match. Holtslag had run onto the field during the game at 8.55pm.

The JPs checked Holtslag’s record – described as his “past performance” – and asked whether he had done this kind of thing before. “Nothing to this level,” Holtslag replied.

Holtslag was told he had interrupted a good game of rugby, and his behaviour had been offensive and unacceptable to an awful lot of people.

Holtslag pleaded guilty to the charge of offensive behaviour.
