Court House-07A New Brighton youth admitted he travelled by taxi for an attempt to rob a dairy while armed with a .22 pistol, in the Christchurch District Court today.

Taukiri Manuell, 19, pleaded guilty to a charge of assault with intent to rob after the incident in a New Brighton dairy, about 4.15pm on June 15.

Police told the court that Manuell took a taxi to New Brighton, and told the driver to park and wait, then walked around the corner and into the dairy.

The victim was watching television in a back room, and as she moved towards Manuell he grasped her by her jersey and took a gold coloured .22 calibre pistol from his jacket pocket.

She thought she was going to be shot and killed, pushed past him and fled. She flagged down a passing car.

He chased her but when he saw members of the public helping her he ran back to the taxi and left.

Manuell rode in the taxi to Aranui where he was arrested after the Armed Offenders Squad became involved.

No property was stolen, and Manuell told police he wanted some more cash for spending money. The victim was uninjured but distressed.

Manuell also pleaded guilty to a charge of taking a pair trousers from the Warehouse Northlands on March 19, and driving while forbidden on July 8.

Judge David Saunders remanded Manuell in custody to September 10, and said he would be given the three strike warning for violent offenders at that appearance.

Judge Saunders ordered a pre-sentence report but said he was not asking for a home detention appendix.
