Papanui Police signA teen burglar who got stuck inside an extraction vent may face a hefty bill for the damage he caused to the fish and chip shop.

Eighteen-year-old Porou Tyman Lypton Wrathall, of Northcote, pleaded guilty to the burglary charge in the Christchurch District Court today.

No reparation figure was revealed in court, but it is understood the claim will include the cost of the damage and possibly a claim for financial losses while the shop had to stay closed. Defence counsel Donald Dickson said the claim was disputed.

Judge Tony Couch remanded Wrathall on continued bail to July 28 for a pre-sentence report and sentence. He also ordered a more detailed report on the reparation claimed, and on Wrathall’s ability to pay it.

Police said that about 1am on June 17, Wrathall went to the fish and chip shop in Langdons Road, Papanui.

He claimed onto the roof of the property and got into the shop by sliding down the extraction vent above the shop’s cooking vats. He ran into the motor on the way down.

“He became stuck halfway down the vent, and after several attempts to free himself, alerted neighbours by yelling for help,” said police prosecutor Sergeant Iain Patton.

Wrathall explained to the police that he was looking for money, and thought he could easily slide down the vent into the shop.

He was freed, covered in grease, after hours stuck in the vent when the fire service cut him out. Wrathall was taken to hospital because it was said at the time he was suffering from hypothermia and crush injuries from being wedged in.

He has no previous convictions.
