Student sentenced on cow illtreatment charges
A 21-year-old student has been sentenced to community detention and community work for illtreatment of two cows on a Landcorp farm near Westport.
James Anthony Murphy, who is attending university in Christchurch, admitted the charge of illtreating a cow and a more serious charge of wilfully illtreating a cow.
The offences occurred in 2012 and 2013 when Murphy had a holiday job at the Totara Dairy Unit at Cape Foulwind, in Buller.
At his sentencing in the Christchurch District Court, Judge Jane Farish imposed four months of community detention and 200 hours of community work.
Murphy has already made a donation to the SPCA.
Judge Farish imposed reporting restrictions on the details of the sentencing because of an upcoming trial for another person on related charges.
