Man has spent years living in car
A 57-year-old man has spent three to four years living in his car, apparently sometimes parking up in shopping mall carparks overnight.
Kenneth McAlpine Gray – unemployed and out of work for the last 10 years – has faced trespass notices from various malls around town.
His latest was today, when he appeared in the Christchurch District Court and pleaded guilty to a charge of trespass at the Bush Inn Centre, Upper Riccarton.
Defence counsel Kiran Paima said Gray had been sleeping in his car for three to four years and it was 10 years since he had held a job.
“Life’s been difficult of late,” he told Judge Gary MacAskill.
There had been no suggestion of any dishonesty associated with the shopping mall trespasses, said Mr Paima. “All he has done is sleep in a car in a car park.”
He accepted that the law barred him from doing that.
Judge MacAskill noted that Gray had been prosecuted for three charges of trespass in 2012 and had been jailed for two months. He was prosecuted again in January 2013.
The judge imposed a sentence of 80 hours of community work.
